The latest iPod application gives new meaning to the phrase: “Killer App.” Runway App has launched their new application for the iPod Touch which allows gun users to more easily line up their targets. For $11.99, hunting enthusiasts can download the BulletFlight app from the iTunes store. This application turns your iPod Touch into a ballistics computer which provides all the calculations you need to make the cleanest shot possible.
BulletFlight
With BulletFlight, all you have to do is mount the iPod touch to your rifle and then tap the relevant data, such as ammo type, distance to target, temperature, humidity, any angle to the target and wind conditions onto the screen. According to the application description “BulletFlight does not output information in table format but rather dynamically gives you the solution you need now to take that shot.” Once all the information is processed, the iPod Touch tells you exactly how to position your scope in order to hit the target.
Using BulletFlight
There are several built-in weapons profiles for the BulletFlight app, all rifles sold by the Knight’s Armament Company in Florida. They are the 14.5 inch SR 16 rifle, the M110 semi-automatic, the 50 BMG M 107, the .308 M40A3, the .308 M24 and the 6.5 mm KAC PDW. More weapon profiles can be added into the app if desired. There is another sighting iPod application, iSnipe, but some users find that they prefer the accuracy that BulletFlight provides.
BulletFlight Variations
If $11.99 is a bit too pricey for this feature, those interested can purchase the light version for only $3.99. For those who are very serious about their hunting, BulletFlight offers a Military-grade version for $29.99, which also calculates bullet drop and factors in bullet spin and the Earth’s Coriolis Effect.
According to the manufacturer, the app offers fast and accurate ballistic computation using G1, G7 or G8 ballistic coefficient values, provides accurate information up to 3000 meters and is currently in use by military snipers in Iraq and Afghanistan, so it should be more than sufficient for any of the average hunting enthusiast’s aiming needs.
